Membership Update

During the Fall semester, club membership grew to 110 students, including 69 underclassmen. The opening of the Finance and Analytics Lab in the new Learning Commons created an opportunity to move our Associate Member training sessions there and has proven an effective way to showcase the club. We continue to offer 5 training sessions covering basic accounting and practical techniques in security analysis using Factset and Bloomberg. The objective is to give new members the tools and guidance that will enable them to develop, analyze, and pitch their own ideas. Our most experienced Portfolio Analysts support the effort helping teams prepare for the Associate Member pitch competition, more on this below.

Associate Member Pitch Competition

Last year we initiated the Associate Member pitch competition to provide more hands-on training to our growing number of younger members. During the club’s training sessions, teams are formed to apply the concepts learned in researching an idea currently in the club portfolio with mentorship from a PA. The teams’ work culminates in a presentation of the idea to the full membership. We had record participation for the Fall 2018 competition with seven teams comprised of 58 Associate Members presenting ideas. The First Solar team was the winner. Congratulations to Brennan Flaherty, David Furlan, Ava Nie, Elena Wallenberg, Jenny Ma, Katelyn Awenson, John Kitaoka, and Leon Pan and their PA mentor Kyle Lindgren!

Portfolio Analysts

To become a Portfolio Analyst, a member must complete the CMC training program, pitch an idea to the club, and demonstrate competence in an interview with club leaders.

The current Portfolio Analysts are:

Connor Bachman, Hannah Davidson, Josh Halpert, David Mathers, Michael Orke, Cole Shandlay, Ben Slupecki, Cole Hyland, Kyle Lindgren (Vice President), Tony Mattioli, Nick Okon (President), Zach Saphner, Travis Bradford (Treasurer), Hanyang Huang, Richard Sundberg, Tien Zhuen Lee, Taran Katta, Brennan Flaherty

Nick Okon (BBA 2020, Finance) is the president of CMC. Nick is from Marshfield, Wisconsin and came to UW because it was the best fit based on its strong business school, attractive campus, and fun school atmosphere. Nick interned with the Marshfield Clinic Retirement Fund after freshman year, Millennium Management after sophomore year, and will be interning with Goldman Sachs in equity research next summer. He first pitched Advanced Micro Devices as a freshman and his since pitched four more ideas, with some winners (THS) and some losers (BMY). Nick likes to hike, watch the Patriot series, and go out with friends in his free time. He hopes to work on the buyside in the future.
